WCPS Guidance Counselors Tour Local Businesses, Learn Workforce Needs

Herald Mail: Today’s workforce needs technical skills and work ethics, counselors told

“Good local manufacturing jobs exist; the trick, some employers say, is finding workers with the right skills for the job.

Local manufacturers hosted middle and high school guidance counselors from Washington County Public Schools on Wednesday for an up-close and personal view of what they do — and what they need from potential workers.”

“We were most impressed today by the opportunities in Washington County, and the business industries that many of us did not know existed or expanded in the past few years,” said Robin Handler, supervisor of school counseling for WCPS.

“I think it’s gonna reinforce the importance of having soft skills, social skills and preparation, a work ethic, attendance and the basic knowledge needed for industry in the future,” she said, “and also, opportunities are available for interns and apprenticeships.”
